A pilgrim could be described in everyday terms as one who embarks on a journey doing what they love in order to nurture themselves. A pilgrim makes the journey from one place to another, this place being a physical place or a non-physical place, and is one which empowers them to change, grow, learn and test themselves.
The pilgrimage is made from one stage of life to another, from one destination to another, and can be seen in many different circumstances in everyday life. To the pilgrim, it is a personal, soulful experience, which places them at the foot of a mountain, the mouth of a sea, or the valley overlooking the horizon, and whether this taken in literally or metaphorically, it is the pilgrimage which seems to create a new person every time.
It is a personally embodied experience, one which the pilgrim themselves understand, and only those who walk the similar path path can understand. To the outsider, they are unaware of what it has taken to reach this part of the journey, nor are they able to understand what it takes to continue to strive towards the completion of this sacred journey within themselves and out into the world.

I know that I have journeyed some distance to get to where I am. There was no instant arrival at the destination and with every journey, comes its own set of challenges and hurdles. I learnt the lessons that I needed to and I followed my heart. I have made physical journeys and non physical journeys to get to where I am. There was my initial reawakening that began after recovering from a knee operation several years ago, to my beginnings as a healer, my adventure to Hawaii that led me to my beloved and led me to pursue a life in Okinawa. Then there are smaller pilgrimages, like my trip to Miyako Island with my mermaid sisters and the inner pilgrimages that revealed greater understandings about myself as a person.
As a writer, I am a pilgrim as I set aside a time to write each and every morning at the beginning of my day. To me, this is like going on an adventure within and sharing my experiences. I love the process of meditating, lighting my candles and calling in my angels and guides, and the gods and goddesses and asking them to assist me. To me, this is like all of us going into my book for a journey to explore the soul.

Thinking about my experiences as a Skateboarder, the energy, patience, and time that goes into learning something new on my board, to driving or skating to a spot and challenging my creativity and imagination reflects qualities of a pilgrim. I can remember when I was younger, my Mother would ask me things like “Why do you need to go all that way to go to one spot? Why don’t you just skate around locally?”
Ah something that Mother could never understand! Every spot is unique, every journey is one of a kind, and every place has an atmosphere of its own. New doors to the heart and mind are always open! It is through these journeys as a skateboard pilgrim that would lead me to expressing my creativity, exploring my imagination and connecting with the people that I am honoured to call my skateboard friends and family. These journeys are then illustrated through skateboard videos which in a sense, document the collaboration of personal triumph and success of the journeys that we have made on our boards.

I train Wing Chun three times a week with my Sifu and Kung Fu Brother at 5 in the morning, so I need to be awake by 4am to get there in time. Some would ask “why so early?”, so I would reply “why not?”
As I make the drive up north, I think about how blessed I am to have the opportunity to train in such a personal arrangement and to be starting the day with another thing that I enjoy doing. My pilgrimage with my study of Wing Chun involves not just the drive to get from home to the beach where we train, but the appreciation of the progression that has taken place and building upon the things that I have learnt.
